Today, we were supposed to be traveling to Nuremberg, but the rail workers are on strike today, so our train was cancelled. I tried booking a bus ticket, but all the buses were fully booked. We decided we would just stay an extra day in Dresden. I contacted our hotel in Nuremberg and explained the situation and asked that they not cancel our reservation, just note that we would be arriving a day later. I was able to book another night in Dresden at the same hotel and the same room we were staying in for an extra night. It was expensive, but at least we don’t have to try and find another hotel. I booked new train tickets for tomorrow to take us to Nuremburg. Since I was able to get everything settled, we can enjoy our extra day in Dresden.
We decided to see some of the sights in Dresden. First, we walked to the Fraenkische, this is a Lutheran church. It was destroyed by bombs during the end of World War II, but the church has been rebuilt. Next, we walked to Bruh’s Terrace. The terrace sits on the Elbe River. It was originally part of the ramparts to protect the city. Between 1739 and 1748, Count Henrich von Bruhl transformed the ramparts into a terrace garden for his palace. In 1814, a staircase was built connecting the Schloss Platz with the terrace and the gardens were open to the public. The staircase is flanked by 4 bronze sculptures each depicting a different season. We walked along the terrace past the Dresden Cathedral. Then we headed back toward our hotel. we stopped and had lunch at a pizza place. Then went back to our hotel to rest.
After taking a nap, we went out in search of a place to eat for dinner. All the restaurants were busy and if you did not have a reservation, then you were not getting in. We opted to go to McDonalds which is right below our hotel. We took it back to our hotel and ate in our room. We packed out suitcases to get ready for our departure tomorrow.
