Day 5 – July 9, 2021, Friday
We left Valentine, NE and headed north into South Dakota. We were driving on US 83 through Mission to White River. At White River we turned west ps State Road 44. Near Corn Creek, we were stopped. We were told that we were entering an Indian Reservation. They asked where we were coming from and where we were headed. They also asked for my first name. They then let us pass, but told us not to stop anywhere. We drove through the Indian Reservations and did not stop.
Just pass the town of Interior, SD, we entered Badlands National Park. The fee to enter is $30, but I have the Senior Pass, so it doesn’t cost me anything. (The Senior Pass has more than paid for itself.). We drove through the park looking at the unique scenery. Is wasn’t too crowded. We did not have any trouble finding parking spaces in the scenic overlooks. We also took the Sage Creek Rim Road to the prairie dog town. It was a gravel road and very dusty. We were able to see some prairie dogs and you could definitely hear them chirping. We then headed back to the main road and into Wall, SD.
Wallis a small town mainly know for the Wall Drug Store. When the Drug Store was first founded, it wasn’t doing too well. Then they decided to start advertising with billboard along the roads coming into Wall. They advertised free ice water. That put Wall Drug Store on the map and eventually made it what it is today . We found a place to park and walked to the Drug Store . It is huge and takes up the whole block . We also drove to the Wall Drug Dinosaur and took pictures.
Jay talked me into getting sandwiches from Subway, since it was right next to out motel.
