Today we woke up, ate breakfast, packed and checked out of the hotel. Before leaving I asked the receptionist if they changed currency, they do not because they don’t have a lot of foreigners stay there. That left me with about 15 euros.
We are headed to Sagres today. It is about three hours away. We set the GPS and off we went. About halfway, I saw a sign about a castle at Silves. I thought it would be fun to go and try to find it. It was way of the highway about 30 or so kilometers. We found the town of Solves and we were finding our way up to the castle. As is usual, the castle is on the highest point and you reach it by driving these narrow roads. Well they apparently hold Sunday mass in the church in the castle and we arrived just as the church was letting out. This made for a terrible traffic jam. We were trying to go up and everyone else was trying to come down on these narrow streets that were made into one lane roads because there were cars parked along one side. We finally gave up when there was a Portuguese woman knocking on Jay’s window telling us to move. We really wanted to go but there was a car in front of us and behind us and cars coming down the hill. Finally I was able to cut in front of the cars coming down the hill and leave the area. If we had waited about thirty minutes hey probably would have all cleared out and we could have seen the castle. But we didn’t, instead we continued in our journey.
We arrived at our hotel in Sagres around 1:30 and checked in. We have a beautiful view of the harbor. We ate lunch at the restaurant. I told Jay this afternoon we were to relax and do what ever we wanted. For Jay that meant going to the gym, for me it meant reading and taking a nap.
Around 7:30, we headed to the restaurant at the hotel for dinner. Because we had not made reservations, they would not seat us. We left and walked around some before deciding to return to our room and order room service. Jay ordered a salmon sandwich and I ordered chicken. We waited and waited for our food to come. About an hour later, I got a call saying our food was on its way and we would not be charged. A few minutes later our food arrived. Apparently, the person taking our order had gotten the wrong room number and since it took them so long to deliver our food, we were not charged.
They rest of the evening will be spent in leisure. We will be spending three nights at this hotel.
