Today, we decided to visit the Green Animals Topiary Gardens. It is located in Portsmouth, RI. In 1905, Thommas Brayton hired Joseph Carreiro to create a formal garden and the topiaries. His son-in-law took over in 1945 and continued developing new topiaries until he retired in 1985. Alice Brayton (Thomas’ daughter) inherited the estate and made it her permanent home in 1940. Upon her death, she left the estate to the Preservation Society of Newport County. There are more than 80 topiaries located on the grounds. There are also flower gardens including 22,000 daffodils in over 70 varieties. In the spring there are 37,000 tulips in various colors. There is also a vegetable garden whose produce is donated to local food pantries. There are also 14 animals and objects made with legos on the grounds. We spent an hour wandering around the grounds.
Next we drove to the Castle Hill Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1898 and stands at the entrance to the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. The lighthouse is not open, but you can visit the grounds.
After that we headed back to the hotel to rest, before we went out walking in the area to look for some where to eat dinner.
