Touring in St. Maarten

Today I let Jay sleep in, after all we are on vacation.  I got up around ten and sat on the balcony during research on things we want to do.  I also did some reading.  Finally around one, I went and woke Jay up.  We decided to go to FORT  Amsterdam.  I could not get my GPS to find a route to the Fort.  I had the same problem with the map app on my cell phone.  We had located where it was on the map, so off we went.  We soon find out why we could not get the two maps to find a route, you have to make a sharp right tuen onto the road.  There is a sign that says right turns are prohibited, so we had to drive pass the road and find somewhere to turn around.   We soon came to a roundabout where we drove all the way around until we were headed back the way we came.  We were then able to make a left hand turn.  The Fort is located at the end of a peninsular on the grounds of the Divi Bay Resort.  We parked outside the resort and then walked to the guard gatehouse.  I asked the guard where the Fort was located and he said to follow the road all the way to the end.

The resort is very large and the walk was slightly sloped uphill until we got to the end of the resort.  From there you have to walk up a steep hill on a rough gravel road.  Jay  went ahead of me and reached the top first.  He started taking his pictures.  I eventually made it to the top.  There were several cannons and ruins of the fort.  The views were incredible.  After resting a bit we headed back down the hill.  The way back to the car was almost completely downhill.

Next, we decided to head into Philipsburg and explore the town.  We saw a sign that pointed out public parking.  On the right side you had to pay and on the left side it was free.  Guess which side I picked.  That’s right, we picked the left side.  Since no cruise ships were docked, the town was almost deserted.  We found a Hard Rock Cafe and had a late lunch.  After walking around some more we headed back to the car.  Then back to the hotel to rest before supper.

We walked across the street to a seafood restaurant for supper.  Both Jay and I had fish.  I had the mahi mahi and Jay had the red snapper.  I was surprised because he doesn’t usually eat seafood.  But he seemed to enjoy it.  Then back to our hotel.
