There were several things on our agenda today. We were going to visit several of the places on the 7 Ancient Trails. First up was The Crane Petroglyph and the Historic V Bar V Ranch. When we arrived, we found out that it is closed on Thursdays. We left there and drove to the Montezuma Well Heritage site.
The Montezuma Well is a large limestone sinkhole. filled with spring water and was formed over 11,000 years ago. There is a 1/2 mile trail to the well and back. Along the way are plants and animals that are only found here. The trail is paved and there are some steps heading to the top. We were not able to take the trail down near the water because bats use the caves there for mating and raising their young, so they close the trail during the maternity season. You could walk around and see the remaining cave dwellings.
Next, we headed to Montezuma Castle National Monument. I have the Senior Pass for National Parks, so it allowed Jay and I to get in for free. Montezuma Castle is a cliff dwelling that sits 90 feet above ground. It is constructed of adobe, stone and wooden beams. The path is paved and is an easy walk.
Finally, we headed to Jerome State Historic Park. We just walked around the parking lot and enjoyed the view. Then we decided to call it a day and headed back to the condo.
