There were several things on our agenda today. We planned to visit several of the sites along the 7 Ancient Trails.
Our first stop was the Crane Petroglyph and Historic V Bar V Ranch. However, when we arrived, we discovered that it was closed on Thursdays. So, we left there and drove to the Montezuma Well Heritage Site.
Montezuma Well is a large limestone sinkhole filled with spring water that was formed over 11,000 years ago. There is a 1/2-mile trail that takes you to the well and back. Along the trail, there are plants and animals that are found only in this area. The trail is paved, although there are some steps leading up to the top.
We were not able to take the trail down near the water because bats use the caves there for mating and raising their young. As a result, the trail is closed during maternity season. However, we were still able to walk around and see the remaining cliff dwellings.
Next, we headed to Montezuma Castle National Monument. I have a Senior Pass for National Parks, which allowed both Jay and me to enter for free.
Montezuma Castle is a cliff dwelling located about 90 feet above the ground. It was constructed using adobe, stone, and wooden beams. The path through the site is paved and provides an easy walk.
Finally, we drove to Jerome State Historic Park. We mostly just walked around the parking area and enjoyed the beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
After that, we decided to call it a day and headed back to the condo.
