Today was another beautiful, sunny day in Iceland. We headed to the Mývatn area. On the way, we stopped at Mt. Námafjall, an area of steam vents and mud springs. The mud craters were very large, and you could see the gray-colored mud bubbling up. You could also really smell the sulfur in the air. The steam vents were covered with rocks, and you could see the steam rising for miles.
Next, we drove to Dimmuborgir. This area is believed to have been formed by an ancient lava pond that emptied after the lava had solidified. This left tall lava structures that form a variety of interesting shapes. There is also a cave called Kirkjan, or “Church,” because of its vaulted entrance. According to Icelandic folklore, this is the spot where the earth connects with the underworld.
We took the 2.5 km path because I wanted to see the cave. Parts of the trail were covered in snow, but we made it to the cave and climbed up to look inside it. This place was very beautiful and peaceful. Even though there was snow on the ground, it did not feel that cold.
We ate supper at the Vogafjós Restaurant. This restaurant has a cow barn attached to it, and you can eat dinner while watching the cows eat or get milked. They make their own cheese, bread, and cakes. I tried the Geysir bread ice cream for dessert. It was not as rich as the ice cream I am used to, and it had a different consistency, but it was still good.
