Castles and Roads in Scotland

Today, Jay and I ate breakfast and checked out of the hotel. We had the receptionist call a taxi to take us to the car rental office. The rental location we chose was near the Glasgow airport, and since we arrived early, we did not have to wait.

We picked up a small automatic SUV, which turned out to be a hybrid. It took some time getting used to driving on the left-hand side of the road. I did sideswipe a parked car with my mirror, but fortunately, it did not damage my car. There was also a lot of driving along the edges of narrow roads.

Our first stop was Hunterston Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan Hunter. We were given a private tour of the castle. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about its history, and it was very interesting to hear stories about the various members of the Hunter Clan. The castle itself was not very large, but it was three stories tall.

After visiting the castle, we stopped at Newark Castle and toured it. It is associated with the Maxwell Clan and is currently managed by Historic Environment Scotland.

We had planned to make several other stops, but we either could not find them or there was nowhere to park, so we decided to head to our hotel in Oban.
